Strings Program

The Foundation has funded the Strings Program since its founding in 2004. The future for the program looks bright. There are students enrolled from fourth grade on, with 36 students in Elementary School, 22 in the Middle School, and 8 in the High School. If support for this program continues, by 2014 the High School Orchestra should have at least 60 members. The program hopes to continue benefiting from a funding partnership between the Foundation and the Rockport Chamber Music Festival.

The Rockport School Orchestras are currently in their 5th year of operation thanks to funding from the Education Foundation. Each year the enrollment in the orchestra program increases as excitement mounts. There are currently about 65 students involved in orchestra between 4th and 12th grade. 26 of those are new string players in the 4th grade orchestra. Many of the students in middle and high school are also enrolled in the chamber music program at school, and several students are now playing in additional ensembles, either playing their instrument in the concert or stage band, or learning a new instrument altogether.

The strings program has become an integral part of the vibrant music department in Rockport. While there is tremendous energy in the Rockport music department, none of its development would be possible without the adamant support of the administration, parents, and the community. The support that the Ed Foundation has given to the music department over the years has been essential to its success. Budget cuts continue to threaten the music department. For budgetary reasons, from 2006 to the present, the number of rehearsals in the middle school band, orchestra and chorus programs was reduced by one third. While still functioning, this crunch has made it very difficult to properly teach material while preparing for concerts. The elementary strings program would not be functional without the efforts of Stephanie Woolf, who volunteers her time four mornings per week. There is a similar situation in the elementary band program where a part-time teacher works with Fran Pierce, but is paid. Stephanie Woolf essentially does that same piece of work but for no money. In order to maintain the current level of excellence in the orchestra program, that position will need to be funded.

On behalf of all the students and parents involved in the strings program, I would like to offer my deepest appreciation for the support the Ed Foundation offers to allow young people the opportunity to make music here in Rockport.

Gratefully yours,
Nathan Cohen
