Artist in Residence - Dance
In the spring of 2010, the EFR is initiating a new dance program in the Elementary School, entitled "Stories in Motion."
The BoSoma Dance company, based in Boston and Danvers, will work with third graders on creating stories with
dance. The workshops will relate the students' composition and writing tools learned in the classroom to creating
choreography. This program follows the state arts and physical education frameworks. At the completion of the
residency, students will present a performance of their work to the rest of the school, parents, and the community, and
will also have a chance to perform on stage with BoSoma company members. We are very excited about this new
program, and, as with a similar program offered in the past, hope the kids enjoy experiencing an art form that can
enhance communication and encourage creative talent and skill for the children in Rockport.
We would like to thank you for funding the Dance Program once again. Over the years, we have found this program to be a wonderful addition to our curriculum. This year, all three classes focused on Slavery and the Underground Railroad. These topics are in our MA History Frameworks and this program provided students with a unique and integrated study of these “tough to teach topics.” Through his thematic teaching, children are able to much better understand the plight of these people and their history.
Not only were all three classes actively engaged in their learning, they were able to experience dance, choreography, and wonderful music. Carl was able to take their ideas and weave them into a fabulous, educational program for parents and other students to view.
Carl has such a nice manner with the children. He is fun, kind, and patient, but able to set clear limits and goals. The kids looked forward to their time with him everyday. We also have found that having the program in third grade, where the theme is local Gloucester history, followed by our fifth grade program, gives students an opportunity to experience a more “professional” kind of choreography and show.
We are very grateful for the support of the Ed Foundation in providing Rockport Elementary fifth graders with this unique and valuable educational opportunity.
Sincerely,
